What does the course cover?
Reception Word Course: The course covers the 45 'key words' which children are expected to recognise by the end of their Reception year at school. They come from a list of the one hundred most frequently used words on the printed page which, in fact, account for half of our written language! They are mainly irregular words, which can't be worked out phonetically. Children need to learn them as 'whole words'. Recognition of these words, particularly if coupled with a sound knowledge of phonics, will lead to success in early reading. This in turn will lead to confidence and an enjoyment of the reading process which is so crucial in the early stages.
Year 1 to 2 Word Course: Each course targets a proportion of the words from the National Literacy Strategy word list for Year 1 to 2. Most of the useful words from this list are covered by a series of two six-week courses. (i.e. 12 different games)
The High Frequency Word courses aim, by means of a series of fun, attractive games, to give the child confidence with the target set of words and to help commit them to the long term memory. These games gradually build into a compendium, which will provide enjoyable repetition to further enhance learning.
What type of activities are provided?
A typical pack will contain:
- A game, targeting a group of words from the high frequency list. All components required for the game are included in the pack. Comprehensive instructions are provided.
- 2 sets of word cards with which to play games, such as 'snap' or the 'pairs game'
- An attractive, fun-to-do worksheet to help reinforce the words being taught, or those from previous sessions.
- Further suggestions for games/ activities/ websites to enhance word recognition.
- An extra game to target your child's 'tricky words'. (You will have an opportunity to feed back, by email or 'phone, information about specific words which your child is finding difficult to commit to memory)
Is my child ready for this course?
- This type of course is usually appropriate any time from the beginning of the child's Reception year, providing the child has already started learning phonics first, and has a reasonable level of letter recognition. If not, the Pre-School Postal Phonics course may be helpful.
- If the child is not confident with the first 45 words by the end of their Reception year, this course is particularly helpful to provide reinforcement and consolidation, resulting in a timely input of knowledge and an increase in confidence needed for the big step-up into Year 1.
- A Year1 to 2 word course may be undertaken as soon as the child is confident with the Reception words, although it is important that phonic skills are progressed concurrently with whole-word skills, as both of these aspects contribute to fluent reading. If the child is confident with the first 45 Reception words, but is struggling to work out words phonetically (by saying the sounds), it may be advisable to tackle the Blending Course first.
How much does the course cost?
The fee per pack is £11, inclusive of postage and packing. The total cost for the course of 6 packs is therefore £66. This includes a zip folder in which to store the collection of games. The fee is payable prior to the start of the postal course.
